From Proto-Southwestern Tai *ˀbɛːŋᴮ³ (“to share; to distribute”) (Jonsson, 1991). Cognate with Thai แบ่ง (bɛ̀ng), Northern Thai ᨷᩯ᩠᩵ᨦ, Lao ແບ່ງ (bǣng), Lü ᦶᦢᧂᧈ (ḃaeng¹), Tai Nüa ᥛᥦᥒᥱ (mǎeng), Phake မိင် (miṅ), Ahom 𑜉𑜢𑜂𑜫 (miṅ) or 𑜈𑜢𑜂𑜫 (biṅ).
