Burmese
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Tibeto-Burman *pʷam (“belly, stomach, waist”), which appears to be related to Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-bʷam ~ s-bʷap (“to swell; swollen, fat, thick; rounded part, mountain, hill”) (STEDT). Cognate with Jingpho [script needed] (pù-hpam, “stomach”), as well as, according to Luce, Old Chinese 範 (OC *bomʔ, “mold; pattern”);[1] a more distant cognate from *s-bʷa(m/p) is Old Chinese 胖 (OC *pʰaːns, “fat (adjective)”).
