Etymology[edit]

From ი- (i-) +‎ ბირ- (bir-, to play; sing) +‎ -ს (-s). Inherited from Proto-Kartvelian *br- (to sing), cognate with Mingrelian ბირ-აფა (bir-apa) and Svan ლი-ბრ-ჲალ-ი (li-br-yal-i).
