Possibly a compound of *ᚺᚨᚦᚢᛉ (*haþuʀ, “war, battle”) +‎ *ᛚᚨᛁᚲᚨᛉ (*laikaʀ, “play, sport”). The first element may also be *ᚺᚨᛞᚢᛉ (*haduʀ /⁠handuʀ⁠/, “hand”), with non-writing of a nasal before a homorganic consonant.
