From Proto-Tai *C̥.wɯnᴬ (“rain”). Cognate with Thai ฝน (fǒn), Northern Thai ᨺᩫ᩠ᨶ, Lao ຝົນ (fon), Tai Dam ꪶꪠꪙ, Shan ၽူၼ် (phǔun) or ၾူၼ် (fǔun), Ahom 𑜇𑜤𑜃𑜫 (phun), Zhuang fwn, Nong Zhuang paen, Saek หวึ่น.
