Etymology[edit]
From ᨩ᩠ᨿᨦ (“city”, especially one walled or fortified) + ᩁᩣ᩠ᨿ (referring to King Mang Rai), literally “Rai('s) City”. Cognate with Thai เชียงราย (chiiang-raai).
