Borrowed from Old Javanese saruṅ (“sarong”), from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *saruŋ (“sheath, sheath-like container; to sheathe a weapon”). Doublet of ᬲᬳᬸᬂ (saung, “sarong, sheath”).
