Ancient Greek[edit]

Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

It is improbable that this expressive word derives from the interjection ἰή (iḗ). The suffix is found only in κοάλεμος (koálemos, stupid fellow, booby), which may have influenced the later meaning of this word. Since κοάλεμος (koálemos) is Pre-Greek, the same must hold for the present word.
