From Ancient Greek Μένδης (Méndēs, Mendes, a city in Lower Egypt) which in turn is from Egyptian [script needed] (Pr-bꜣ-nb-ḏd.t, temple of Banebdjedet, a ram god whose cult centre was at Mendes).
