Etymology[edit]
Originally 平洲. The qualifier 東/东 (dōng, “east”) was added to distinguish the island from another island named 坪洲 (ping4 zau1, “Peng Chau”), which is homophonous with 平洲 (ping4 zau1) in Cantonese.
