Etymology[edit]

From 狗仔 ("puppy") +  ("team"). Originally Cantonese. When the word paparazzi was first introduced to Hong Kong, it was frequently rendered as "puppy" because the word "puppy" was easier to pronounce. Additionally, puppies follow people around in a similar way to the paparazzi. Later on, the Cantonese word for "puppy" (狗仔) was substituted for the English word. Still later, ("pack") was added. From Hong Kong, the term eventually spread in popularity to other Chinese speaking areas, such as PRC and Taiwan, where the Mandarin pronunciation of the characters is used.
