From Proto-Karen *ʔbwaᴬ (white) (Luangthongkum, 2019) or *ʔwa³ (idem) (Burling, 1969), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *b/s-wa (white; yellow; bright). Cognate with Pa'o Karen ဗွာ, S'gaw Karen ဝါ (wah), Western Pwo ဘွၩ.
