Inherited from Old Javanese tĕmu (meeting, joining, touching), from (Western) Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *təmu (to meet, receive; greet a guest), or alternatively from Proto-Mon-Khmer *t₁mu, *t₁muj, *t₁muəj (guest, visitor). Doublet of ꦠꦩꦸ (tamu).
