삐 ←→ 새

Korean[edit]

Etymology[edit]

First attested in the Bullyu dugongbu si eonhae (分類杜工部詩諺解 / 분류두공부시언해), 1481, as Middle Korean 삷〮 (Yale: sálp).

The unusual simplification of the final consonant cluster may have been due to misinterpretation of the word as deriving from Sino-Korean (sap), a rare word for "shovel".
