From 쇠 (soe-, “cow”, prefix) + 기름 (gireum, “oil”).

- (SK Standard/Seoul) IPA(key): [ˈsʰwe̞(ː)ɡiɾɯm] ~ [ˈsʰø̞(ː)ɡiɾɯm]
- Phonetic hangul: [쉐(ː)기름/쇠(ː)기름]
- Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
