Etymology

First attested in the Gugeupbang eonhae (救急方諺解 / 구급방언해), 1466, as Middle Korean 외〯 (Yale: wǒy).

Possibly cognate with Japanese 瓜 (uri, “gourd, squash, melon”); compare other terms in the Japonic family, such as Kikai 瓜 (ui) and Yoron 瓜 (ui).
