Gothic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Germanic *un-, from Proto-Indo-European *nฬฅ-.
Prefix
[edit]- un-; negation prefix.
Usage notes
[edit]- Adjectives formed with this prefix often have a connotation of unable to ... , as in ๐ฟ๐ฝ๐ท๐ฟ๐ฝ๐๐ป๐ฐ๐ฒ๐ (unhunslags), which means implacable (as opposed to not pertaining to sacrifice, as its derivation might suggest), and in ๐ฟ๐ฝ๐ฑ๐น๐ป๐ฐ๐น๐๐๐น๐ธ๐ (unbilaistiรพs) and ๐ฟ๐ฝ๐๐ฐ๐น๐๐ป๐ฐ๐น๐๐๐น๐ธ๐ (unfairlaistiรพs), which both mean inscrutable (as opposed to merely unsearched or unfound as their derivations might suggest).
