From Proto-Anatolian *lรณlos or *lฤlos. Kloekhorst further suggests an onomatopoeic origin. Compare Cuneiform Luwian ๐’†ท๐’‡ท๐’…– (la-li-iลก, โ€œtongue, gossipโ€) and Hieroglyphic Luwian ๐”“Š๐”“Š๐”‘ฃ๐”“ฏ๐”ค (LINGUA-la-ti-i-na /โ lalatฤซnaโ /, โ€œlanguageโ€, accusative singular).
