Etymology[edit]
A clipping of Akureyri, with the English word city. Likely a humorous imitation of "Rvk city" (short for "Reykjavík City"), which has connotations of English-language tourism or metropolitanism. Akureyri is however not a city but a town. The term was first seen in print in 2014.
