Etymology[edit]

First attested as ekerslato in 1083. Compound of an unclear first element and Old Frisian slato (ditch). The first element may potentially derive from a (variant of) Old Frisian ekker (farmland). The first element is unlikely to derive from a personal name or from aker (acorn).
