Dutch[edit]

Etymology[edit]

First attested as alkmade in 1182-1206. Compound of Old Dutch *alke (mud) or alk (crow) and made (meadow). The municipality was named after the van Alkemade family, which received its name from the territory it ruled. Compare Alkmaar.
