Etymology[edit]
First attested as iuxta locum dictum Amstel in 1388. Compound of van Amstel (“a surname”) and eind (“edge, end”). Named after the descendants of Jan I van Amstel (ca. 1270-1345), who were forced to flee to the area around Oss due to their father's wrongfully alleged involvement in the assassination of Floris V, Count of Holland (1254 - 1296).
