Descriptive word (deskriptiivisana) is a term used in Finnish grammar and etymology to refer to words that utilize sound symbolism to express ideas but which are not necessarily strictly speaking onomatopoeic. This use is unrelated to the use of the term "descriptive word" for adjectives (and some adverbs) which can be seen in learning materials aimed for English learners. Descriptive words can belong to any part of speech, including but not limited to nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs. Descriptive word formation is a process that remains productive to this day, yet the exact rules behind it are yet to be accurately described.
