Hogwarts has four "houses": Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. These are named after the founders of Hogwarts: Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Salazar Slytherin.[1] The name of a house may also mean someone from said house, such as "Harry Potter is a Gryffindor, while Draco Malfoy is a Slytherin."

Coat of arms of Hogwarts. The lion represents Gryffindor, the badger represents Hufflepuff, the eagle represents Ravenclaw, and the snake represents Slytherin. The motto below, "Draco dormiens nunquam titilandus", means, in Latin, "Never tickle a sleeping dragon."

Gryffindor[edit]

  • Animal mascot: lion.
  • Notes: Gryffindor is associated with bravery.

Hufflepuff[edit]

  • Animal mascot: badger.

Ravenclaw[edit]

  • Animal mascot: eagle.

Slytherin[edit]

  • Animal mascot: snake.
  • Notes: Salazar Slytherin, the founder, was a parselmouth (could converse with snakes), so the snake is the symbol of said house. Salazar Slytherin is widely considered a Dark wizard, and Slytherin is the main house of Hogwarts with a reputation of producing Dark wizards. Lord Voldemort was also a parselmouth.
