Etymology[edit]

Per Koivulehto (2006) from earlier *äjere, borrowed from early Proto-Balto-Slavic *(h₁)éǵer-, from which later *éźera (lake). The meaning 'edge' is seen in the Armenian cognate եզր (ezr).
