From Proto-Indo-European *ģ(e)yH-tí-, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵī-, *ǵey- (“to split open, sprout”). Related to Proto-Germanic *kī- (“to split open, germinate, sprout”); see *kīnaną for more.[1]
