From *miksk-, an ablaut variant of *mīksk-, from base *mīk-, from Proto-Indo-European *meiǵ-, *meiḱ- (to mix, knead). Cognate with *maikskaz, *maikskō (mixture), Latin misceo (mix, verb), Old Irish mescad (mix, verb), Ancient Greek μίσγειν (mísgein, to mix), Old Indian [script?] (mekṣáyati, to mingle, mix).
