From Proto-Indo-European *rukn-, *rÁkn- (weaving, web), from Proto-Indo-European *ruk-, *rug- (to spin, make clothes). Compare Proto-Indo-European *araKsn- (spider). Cognate with Latin arānea (spider, spiderweb), Ancient Greek ἀράχνη (arákhnē, spider, spiderweb), Old English renge, rynge (spider, spiderweb).
