Etymology [edit]

Common Balto-Slavic, cognate with Latvian galva, Lithuanian galva, Old Prussian gallū, galwo.

Possibly related to *golъ (bold), which is possibly related to Old High German kalo (bold). Compare also Latin calva (skull).

Relation to Old Armenian գլուխ (glux, head) is also possible.
