Germans[edit]

Robert L. Reynolds and Robert S. Lopez said in 1946 that there were German philologists that tried adding an r to the root *ski. The Germans did that to make certain peoples in the Late Antiquity look Germanic. Is it true that the r was added? Or is it impossible to backtrack? 81.68.255.36 11:10, 1 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This is probably referring specifically to the Sciri. However, Proto-Germanic *skīriz (pure, clear, sheer) is a seriously reconstructed word based on reflexes throughout Germanic. The underlying verbal root is Proto-Indo-European *(s)ḱeh₁y-. --Florian Blaschke (talk) 21:48, 26 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
