Dutch[edit]

Etymology[edit]

First attested as belven in 1326. Etymology uncertain. The oldest attestations indicate the name is a compound formed from an uncertain first element and veld (field). The proposed reading of the name as a compound of Proto-Germanic *bala- (white) and ven (bog, marsh) is incorrect.

See also Limburgish Belvend.
