Etymology[edit]

Potentially attested as breitenfurt in 944, attested with certainty as berdawird in 1417. Borrowed from West Frisian Burdaard, derived in turn from a compound of either Old Frisian bird (shore, edge) or brēd (broad, wide) and uurð (terp, artificial mound used for habitation).
