Etymology[edit]

First attested as van des bisscopsweteringe in 1426. Compound of bisschop (bishop) and wetering (drainage channel). The element bisschop refers to Jan Van Arkel (ca. 1314-1378), the Prince-Bishop of Utrecht who initiated the construction of the channel.
