Etymology[edit]

Potentially attested as orlinguerba around 825-842, attested with certainty as bollingaweer in 1511. Borrowed from West Frisian Bollingwier, derived in turn from a compound of Old Frisian Bolle (a personal name) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -ingi- and weer (artificial mound used for habitation).
