Category talk:Terms by Arabic root by language

Scope?

Why does this have subcategories for "Muslim-majority" languages (e.g., Turkish, Swahili, Albanian) and some other "Eastern" languages (e.g., Nepali, Kannada), but not e.g. Spanish or English which have a lot of borrowings too? Is this just because nobody has so far bothered to make them, or is there a good reason why they should not be made? I just noticed there's Norwegian, which is an exception to the rule above, so I guess it's just a lack of interest by the editor communities. 70.172.194.25 00:33, 12 February 2022 (UTC)

I have gone through and added roots when I could find them for all English words starting with 'a' in Category:English terms derived from Arabic. I could continue this project but I'd prefer confirmation that what I'm doing makes sense, so I don't end up spending more time on work that is superfluous. I think this project actually does have merit, and can illuminate unclear connections, as imperfect as Semitic roots are as etymological tags. There are some words like ayat that really seem like they should have roots but I was unable to find them; and for roots I was not sure of (generally following Wiktionary's Arabic coverage) I left <!--comments--> with my best guess. Of course, some roots are denominative from loanwords and such, but if the Arabic term included a root I figured the English term deriving from Arabic would too. 70.172.194.25 03:41, 16 February 2022 (UTC)
