Etymology[edit]

First attested as dointhimwalde in 1369. Calque of West Frisian Dantumawâld, a compound of Old Frisian Dantuma (a surname) and wald (marsh forest, swamp forest). Fused in 1971 with Akkerwoude and Murmerwoude to form Damwoude.
