Etymology[edit]

First attested as Doddingebuyrt in the 17th century. Calque of West Frisian Deddingabuorren, a compound of Deddinga (a surname) and the plural form of buer (house, cottage). The second element was gradually replaced by buurt (hamlet). Compare Dedgum.
