Etymology[edit]
First attested as duncbrueck, dumbraech and dongbroec in 1408. Potentially derived from a compound of Dutch Low Saxon dong (“manure, dung”) and broek (“marsh, marshland”). The first element was gradually reinterpreted to donker (“dark”).
