Etymology[edit]

First attested with certainty as dronryp around 1243. Borrowed from West Frisian Dronryp, potentially derived in turn from a compound of Old Frisian *Drenno (a personal name) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -ingi- and ripe (edge, bank).
