Etymology[edit]

First attested as emnesse in 1269. Derived from a compound of the hydronym Eem and Middle Dutch nesse (headland, spit). The element binnen (within) refers to the village's location within the area protected by a former levee and was included to distinguish the settlement from Eemnes-Buiten.
