Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Norse *Aiwa-rikiaR, "ever ruler," or from Proto-Norse *Aina-rikiaR, "one ruler." *Aiwa- is cognate to Latin aevum (life, lifetime). *Aina- stems from Proto-Germanic *ainaz (one). The second part, *-rikiaR stems from Proto-Germanic *rīkijaz.
