From Old Norse eyrr +‎ sund. Known from a runic inscription in a dative case form written as Old Norse ᚢᚱᛅ ᛋᚢᛏᛁ (ura suti, in the gravel bank sound). Akin to Faroese Oyrasund, Norwegian Nynorsk Øyresund, Danish Øresund, and Swedish Öresund.
