Etymology[edit]

First attested as fatruwerde between 819 and 825. Borrowed from West Frisian Ferwert, derived in turn from a compound of an unclear first element and Old Frisian werth (terp, artificial mound used for habitation). Compare Feerwerd and Fedderwarden.
