Etymology[edit]

From Old Norse Flatdalr, from flatr (flat) +‎ dalr (valley). The modern pronunciation with /d/ in the first part is an assimilation with the following consonant, cf. the nearby Heddal, Heiddal < *Heitdal (Old Norse Heitradalr).
