    • 1810, "Werken der Bataafsche Maatschappij van Taal- en Dichtkunde. IVde Deel." (review), Vaderlandsche letteroefeningen, page 383.

  2. (historical, mythology) The mythological Golden Age of classical antiquity, under the rule of Saturn as chief deity.
  3. Any other specific golden age.

Usage notes[edit]

  • Gouden Eeuw came into use of the seventeenth century during the nineteenth century, originally chiefly in reference to poetry and literature and subsequently also to painting and architecture. It was later expanded to include a political golden age. The latter usage is now more contested, due to the colonialism that began in the seventeenth century.
