Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Compound of Grischt (Christ) +‎ Munet (month). This term comes from the fact that December is when Christmas takes place, which is called Grischtdaag in Pennsylvania German. Compare German Julmond (Yulemonth), North Frisian Jöölmuun (Yulemonth), Old English ærra geola (Early Yule, the Former Yule), all signifying that Yule was the most important matter regarding December.
