From Middle High German gīge, from Old High German gīga, from Proto-Germanic *gīganą (to move, wish, desire), from Proto-Indo-European *gʰeyǵʰ-, *gʰeygʰ- (to yawn, gape, long for, desire). Cognate with German Geige.
