Dutch[edit]
Etymology[edit]
First attested as hamescheym in 1243. Likely a compound of an unknown first element and heem (“home, settlement”). The first element is unlikely to be Hans (“a personal name”), as Christian names were introduced to Dutch in a period when the heem element was no longer productive in toponyms. Compare Driesum and Janum.
See also Limburgish Hansem.
