First attested as hanaten in 944. Borrowed from West Frisian Hantum, a toponym of unknown etymology. Potentially derived from an ancient hydronym or from a term cognate to Transalpine Gaulish cant (“white”). Compare Kantens and Cantaing-sur-Mer.
