Etymology[edit]

First attested as heringhehusen in 1344. Compound of Middle Dutch Here (a personal name) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -ing- and the plural form of huus (house). The first element was gradually reinterpreted to haring (herring, Clupea harengus).
